What are the Differences Between Drivetrain & Powertrain?

What’s the difference between drivetrain and powertrain? Essentially, the drivetrain delivers power to the wheels. The powertrain includes both the engine and the drivetrain.

Drivetrain and Powertrain

You might not know off the top of your head what the advantages are of comparing a drivetrain vs. powertrain however when you recognize the distinctions between the two, it will provide you the edge when vehicle buying, checking out the technician, or when Alex Trebek asks you a Jeopardy question regarding automobile parts that make cars move.

In short, powertrains and drivetrains essentially do the same thing. They produce kinetic energy to make your vehicle ‘go’. Now, chances are that you have never really thought about exactly how essential these moving parts are. They’re the unrecognized heroes that get you from point A to point B and they each work in their own special method.

What are the Drivetrain Components?

Oftentimes the terms ‘drivetrain’ and ‘powertrain’ are used interchangeably yet, contrary to popular belief, they are not the same. So just what is the difference between powertrain components and drivetrain parts? The greatest distinction is the way power is created and distributed to the vehicle.

A drivetrain is not really a single part of your vehicle – it’s a group of drivetrain parts that collaborate with the engine to move the wheels and various parts of the vehicle to move it into motion. These components typically consist of the transmission, differential, driveshaft, axles, CV joints, and the wheels.

How Does A Drivetrain Work?

This is the order in which power is generated and provided by a drivetrain:

  • The engine will generate energy to power a flywheel
  • That flywheel works with the transmission to manage the amount of power dispersed to other parts of the drivetrain
  • The driveshaft spins to produce power to a differential
  • The differential then supplies power from all those driveshaft components and boom … your wheels are moving

Powertrain: What’s in it?

If you mastered the drivetrain basics, the powertrain basics should be a very easy idea to understand, due to the reality that there is just one defining variable that sets them apart. That factor is the engine. In a powertrain, the engine belongs of the many moving elements. If you remember from the paragraph above, the drivetrain works with the engine.

The powertrain incorporates every moving part that is essential to the car’s success. Its sole purpose is transforming kinetic energy into propulsion movement. If one of these components fail your car might experience some uncommon rattling, or shaking.

We had an emergency while traveling through Beaumont and had our vehicle towed here. Doug Sammons couldn't have been more helpful. He made sure we felt comfortable while waiting for the mechanic to assess the problem and explained everything and gave us a quote before proceeding with the repairs. We were very pleased with everyone at the dealership and were in and out much more quickly than expected.
